The origin of our business is salt. Nobian produces high purity salt via solution mining and subsequent purification. The salt is converted into chlorine, caustic, and hydrogen via electrolysis which is one of our core technologies. Salt and electrochemistry are connected to two-thirds of all chemical production and our products serve a wide range of markets from construction, cleaning, aluminum, paper, and insulation, to pharmaceuticals, water treatment, plastics, paints, and batteries. Part of the chlorine is used captively in producing chlorinated compounds such as chloromethanes and hypochlorite.
Extending Electrolysis
We are building on electrolysis, our core technology, to expand our product portfolio into hydrogen and potentially lithium hydroxide. Nobian is currently the largest producer of green hydrogen from chlor-alkali electrolysis in The Netherlands. We are involved in the scaling of safe, reliable, and affordable green hydrogen solutions through our joint venture with Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (GIG), the Hydrogen Chemistry Company (HyCC). Our salt mining enables the safe and reliable underground storage of green energy; salt caverns are essential for storing hydrogen and help create the necessary infrastructure for society’s hydrogen ambitions. Green hydrogen is a key ingredient in the decarbonization of key industries such as aviation, steel, chemicals, and refineries, as well as transportation.
We are uniquely positioned to play a key role in the energy transition. We source, use, produce and store energy, and will continue to do so in the future.
